The Amazons are one of the more famous elements of the fantasy world. They are an all-female tribe that are renowned for their skill in battle, both in the use of their weapons and in their agility and strength. They keep the tribe going by visiting the men of a neighbouring tribe to procreate, returning any male children to their fathers whilst bringing the girls up themselves. They live in a remote land, but can get involved in many wars, where their abilities as warriors make them useful allies. Those who are familiar with the back-story of Wonder Woman through DC comics or the films will recognise the strong influence the Amazon legend had on that character. One theory as to the origin of this Greek myth is that some societies on the fringe of the Greek world such as the Scythians certainly had female warriors, as modern archaeology has shown, but whatever the inspiration they have been a popular subject down the ages.
Since the Amazons originally came from Greek mythology, these figures naturally have the look and feel of the ancient Greek world. There is very little costume here, most being bare-breasted and wearing no more than a small loincloth. However the helmets, weapons and shields are what give the Greek flavour here. Amazons are famous for their archery skills, so it is appropriate that half the poses in this set are armed with the bow. Most of the rest have a spear, and just one is holding a sword. The poses are pretty good, and even some of the archers give a sense of them being on the move as they loose an arrow, although there is not much here that would be suited to hand-to-hand combat. It must be said that the Amazons have been the excuse for a lot of what might be termed soft porn, and the bare breasts and buttocks here follow in the same tradition. The sculptor has made a good job of sculpting the slimmer female form, and the sculpting is quite good, although as can be seen above there is a tremendous amount of flash on the figures we received. A lot of work will be required to rescue these figures from all that unwanted plastic, but once done you would have a collection of figures that almost anyone would recognise as archetypal Amazon.
