Although many Dark & Light Alliance sets describe themselves in general terms, it is worth pointing out that all of these heavy cavalry figures have an emblem of a tree with roots on their shield, and on their cloak where they have one, which would bring the Lord of the Rings kingdom of Gondor to mind for many. What we actually have here are a selection of men in heavy armour - basically scale armour with many elements of plate – and wearing helmets in the Corinthian style (i.e. with good face protection) but with no crest; just a ridge running front to back, apart from the last pictured figure, who has wing decorations on his helmet. All are very heavily armed; each has a large sword strapped to his back, a second, smaller example on his left hip, and a dagger on the right. All have ring hands into which the various separate weapons can be placed as desired. The two lances are presumably for the two figures in our second row, and the rest have either a sword or the axe to carry – there are slightly more weapons than hands, so some flexibility is possible. They look pretty fearsome, just as heavy cavalry should, and the poses are reasonable too.
The horses are also quite heavily protected, with assorted elements of armour or at least heavy decorative items. The poses are fair and all are clearly moving at a pace. We are happy to report that all the men sit on their horses very well, but in most cases the ring hand will need to be enlarged a little to take the chosen weapon, particularly the axe. However these are really nicely produced figures with interesting and attractive detail. Those holding what is essentially a two-handed sword with one hand, and whilst riding, don’t make quite as much sense as the others, but in the world of fantasy this hardly matters, and these are good-looking figures.
