There are Scandinavian traditions that describe trolls hurling boulders at completed or half-built churches, explaining this by saying the ringing of the church bells disturbed them. However those with an interest in the world of fantasy might be more familiar with trolls using such skills in battle, or at least a siege, when they might attempt to destroy fortifications or enemy engines of war. Unlike the first set of trolls, which are dressed and armed as warriors, these trolls wear no more than a loin cloth and a cap, and do not carry weapons. Instead, each wears a harness, which in one case has loops at each side, and apparently this figure is supposed to be pushing siege towers. The last pictured figure holds a chain between his hands with handles on the end, and we understand this is modelled after such a creature in the Lord of the Rings films which is opening the Morannon Gate. Otherwise their scaly skin and enormous hands and feet are clear for all to see, and the offensive value of the two carrying or hurling boulders is easy to see.
The chosen poses are relatively easy to model, and these creatures are large - about 50 mm in height - so they are less of a challenge to the sculptor, but the results are still impressive. The skin and harness is nicely done, and the faces - particularly the teeth-filled mouths - are excellent. There is a relatively small amount of flash, and the poses mean there is no excess plastic anywhere, so these are well presented. The troll pulling something with the chain over his shoulders should have that chain well away from his neck rather than against it as here, but we loved both the sculpting and the poses, and although they are not warriors as such, they would give any fantasy army some considerable muscle.
