The cry of 'To The Barricades' must have been a familiar one in parts of Spain during the civil war as towns and cities were fought over street by street. 'A Las Barricadas' was also a well known anarchist song popular during the civil war, and now it is also the title of this set, one of an extensive range from BUM that depict this cruel and bloody conflict.
All the figures and motorcycle are resin, and many will recognise them as previously made by MIR. The motorcycle was previously to be found in the MIR set of German Reconnaissance Destroyed, while the figures come from the sets French Resistance WWII, Russian Berlin 1945 and World War II Civilians. See the reviews of those sets for general comments on these figures. In this set all the figures are described as casualties, and serve just as well for Spanish civilians and fighters as they do for the original subjects. Clearly therefore the barricade is only being manned by wounded and dead.
The barricade itself is vacuformed, and at the base it is 125mm by 50mm, with a height of approximately 15mm. It is made up of various shapes, suggesting it was built of random bits of rubble etc., which is reasonable. However the ends are very regular and entirely unrealistic, so perhaps these were meant to be removed.
Completing the contents is a paper with a number of scale posters appropriate to the war (see below) - a nice touch that can aid diorama-builders.
This is not the kind of set to take the world by storm, and it should be seen in the context of the rest of the range. However the poor figures and the fairly simple barricade are not impressive, and the fact that are the people are casualties means there is not a great deal that can be done with this set.
