Review

Whether by chance or design, the appearance of this set was well timed as HaT had only recently released the first set of Great War Turkish troops. Since HaT do not include any casualties in their set, this product from MIR is a suitable companion.

As with all MIR sets, everyone here is on the deck. Some seem to be alive still, but many show serious damage to their bodies, though whether this is intentional or down to poor sculpting is debatable.

The standard of sculpting is not too good, but it is enough to show that the historical accuracy is pretty poor. Most of the men wear the tarbush, or fez, which was only worn when off duty by 1914. Therefore these men are unfortunate enough to have been injured while not on duty. The other two men seem to wear the kabalak, a unique Turkish helmet with no peak. The absence of a peak was for religious reasons, and was very important, yet both these men wear a headdress more akin to the European sun hat, with a substantial brim all round. This is much too large and the wrong shape. Furthermore, where the front of the tunic is visible it is clear that it includes two breast pockets - Turkish soldiers did not wear such a tunic.

As can be seen, there are large holes where the resin has failed to fill the mould. For the most part this is restricted to the base, but it does nothing to improve the look of these figures, which also suffer from poor and indistinct detail. The use of the fez is the main problem here, since it would be unlikely to see a battlefield strewn with dead men so dressed, though these figures may have a role if placed under the converters knife.
