The hookah is basically an apparatus for smoking tobacco. It first appeared around India/Persia not long after tobacco was introduced to the Old World by European explorers, and has become a part of Arab culture, where its use is a social event. In this set there are two hookahs, with a couple of figures smoking them. To add to the mellow atmosphere there are three musicians playing for the entertainment of all.
As always, these Nikolai figures are beautiful, with fine intricate detail and completely free of excess material despite the highly complex poses. Everything is natural, with the expressions on the faces being the usual highlight. Having one man perched on the stool is a lovely touch, so this is a very fine set depicting one of those moments when life just slows down and everything seems at peace.
