An army of the dead would seem like a good thing to have on your side, since, after all, they cannot be killed. This might make you wonder why they bothered to wear armour or carry shields, and we have yet to hear a sensible answer to that question. Nevertheless, in this set we find the 'heavier' mounted warriors of the Army of the Dead, heavier by having more armour and more shields as well as some heavier weapons. The pointless armour is of various types, and like the shields owe inspiration to different periods in medieval history. Since it would seem that most fantasy lands have more than a passing resemblance to human medieval history, this all seems acceptable as far as it goes, although if these were historical figures then we would wonder at the choice of a large two-handed axe for one mounted man and the two-handed sword of another. The wasted 'undead' flesh of these creatures is not apparent as there is little flesh, or bone, exposed, so while the clothes are in poor repair, these are not without potential for an historical setting.

The sculpting is reasonably good, especially when you remember that undead men might be rather tatty and distressed in their appearance. Some of the poses, particularly those holding two-handed weapons, are very flat, but no more so than many historical medieval sets. The two foot figures are very nice, although you might think that the king figure (judging by his crown) would have been given a horse too. The horses are exactly the same animals as those found in the set of light dead cavalry, and are equally unwell to look at, but all the riders fit their mounts well. There is some flash on these figures, mostly on the riders rather than the horses, and a couple are very tricky to remove from the cramped sprue. However if you need a group of dead cavalry well-protected from becoming, well, even more dead, then this is the product for you.
